30-03-2024 Van Gogh - Starry Night - Pencil for Saluzzo exhibition

With this new pencil rendition of Van Gogh's Starry Night, I am initiating the representation of about twenty new drawings based on the famous works of the Dutch artist. I will be presenting the works that follow from this date onwards, concerning Van Gogh's creations to exhibit them in Saluzzo in a dedicated show scheduled for this autumn... I don't have many details yet, and I won't go into too much detail, as the works I will propose will be recreated from scratch, and I will not exhibit any old ones as they are final drafts for personal practice.

I admire Van Gogh's creations, especially his colors, so rich in their shades. In fact, my challenge is to depict them in pencil since, as far as I'm concerned, this form of drawing is the most spontaneous of all, as all that's needed is a sheet of paper and a simple pencil!

Van Gogh was often criticized by Paul Gauguin, to the extent that Gauguin casually asserted that his friend's works seemed laden with plaster! Well, they could throw any 'insult' at each other since they were universally recognized as unique and incomparable, with completely different characteristics in their creations.

Another figure closely associated with Van Gogh is clearly Helene Kröller-Müller, as it may be thanks to this woman that Van Gogh became so famous... As she was the first to attempt (and succeed) in establishing a gallery dedicated to him in the Netherlands.

- OTHER FEATURES -
"Starry Night" by Vincent van Gogh is one of his most famous and iconic paintings. Created in 1889 during his stay at the psychiatric hospital of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this painting depicts a nighttime landscape with a view of the starry sky above a cityscape.

The meaning of the painting can be interpreted in various ways, as van Gogh was known for his intense emotional expression through art. Some possible meanings include:
Emotional expression: "Starry Night" might reflect Van Gogh's tumultuous mood and inner struggle. During this period, the artist was grappling with severe mental health issues, and the painting could represent his view of the world and reality through the filter of his tormented mind.
Connection with nature: Van Gogh was deeply connected to nature and believed it to be a source of inspiration and solace. "Starry Night" could represent his quest for serenity and comfort in the beauty of nature, even during moments of personal anguish.
Spirituality and transcendence: Some interpret the starry sky in the painting as a representation of spirituality and the search for meaning beyond earthly life. The vastness of the starry sky could suggest a connection with the universe and something greater than oneself.
Artistic expression: The way Van Gogh manipulated color and form could be interpreted as artistic self-expression. The painting demonstrates his distinctive technique of thick brushstrokes and vibrant colors, which could be seen as an expression of his passion and artistic fervor.

I conclude by writing that given my passion for amateur astronomy, as an amateur astronomer, I specifically selected Starry Night to kick-start this new creative idea!

From this point onward, I begin the dissemination of my pencil drawings in English. I seize the opportunity of my upcoming first exhibition to pursue this other intention...
