01-05-2024 - Self-portrait Vincent Van Gogh 1889-90 in pencil
It hit me a bit to realize this portrait of Van Gogh. In
fact, as I was about to trace the facial features and finished the gaze, I had
to put down the pencil and pause for a moment. It's a sensation I have in every
circumstance when I reproduce a face. I feel like the person in question is
looking at me, I don't know how to describe it, but that's the effect I perceive...
A sensation...
What I reinterpret here in pencil is considered one of the best self-portraits
made by the artist, so I chose it. He was a guest at the asylum of Saint Remy de
Provence, recovering after a long psychiatric crisis of two months where Van
Gogh attempted suicide by ingesting chemical colors used for his works. Like
other creations, this one was also sent to his brother Theo with a letter of
explanation...
